Football legend Alan Shearer believes Brighton manager Fabian Hürzeler should be a top contender if Manchester United decide to part ways with Michael Carrick.
Carrick is currently under intense pressure due to Manchester United's shaky start to the season, with only two wins in their first 10 matches across all competitions. While the club's leadership is backing him for now, another dip in form could force the INEOS group to explore other options.
Meanwhile, Hürzeler has steered Brighton in the opposite direction. The Seagulls are flying high, sitting third in the Premier League after an impressive run that has seen them become one of the league's most exciting and tactically adaptable teams.
Shearer pointed to Hürzeler as a strong candidate should Carrick be dismissed. "If Carrick is relieved of his duties, Hürzeler would be a good replacement, but it’s a very different model at Brighton," Shearer commented, as reported by Metro. He also mentioned Eddie Howe and Antonio Conte as potential alternatives, acknowledging that speculation is unavoidable when a Manchester United manager isn't delivering wins.
Hürzeler's stock has risen significantly, with Brighton recently thumping Crystal Palace 5-0 and scoring 23 goals in seven league games to climb into the Champions League spots. Brighton chairman Tony Bloom has lauded Hürzeler, praising his "consistent on-pitch performances" and the development of a "clear playing identity," highlighting the team's "resilience, intensity and control" under his guidance.
These qualities are precisely what Manchester United seem to be lacking. Hürzeler's aggressive pressing, tactical flexibility, and willingness to nurture young talent align with the long-term vision INEOS has expressed. However, Shearer's caution about the differing environments is valid. Brighton operate within a well-structured system, while United grapple with recruitment challenges, boardroom scrutiny, and immense external pressure. While Hürzeler is undoubtedly one of Europe's most promising young coaches, success at Old Trafford would demand more than just tactical acumen.
For the moment, Carrick remains in charge. But if results don't improve swiftly, Hürzeler's name is likely to remain a prominent topic of discussion.
