The General Union of Yemeni Journalists (GUYJ) welcomed UN Security Council Resolution No. (2624) issued on Monday, which designated the Houthi militia as a terrorist group.
The UN Security Council voted on Monday to impose an expanded arms embargo on Yemen's Houthi rebels, saying they have threatened the peace, security and stability of the war-torn country.
The Security Council had already imposed an asset freeze, travel ban and arms embargo against Houthi leaders and top officials, but this resolution dramatically expands the arms embargo to include all Houthis.
In a statement, (GUYJ) said that the UNSC Resolution (2624) comes in line with international efforts to address terrorism and sabotage perpetrated by the Houthi group, and will contribute to limiting their military capacity they receive from Iran and its affiliates in the region.
It expressed its aspirations that this Resolution will contribute to putting an end to the activities of the Houthis and their supporters, as this would neutralize the militia and stop supplying them with missiles, drones, quality weapons and Iranian funds to finance their war effort, as well as curbing Khomeini's terrorist ideological expansion in the area.
The (GUYJ) condemned the crimes committed by the Houthis against the Yemeni people, and the cross-border terrorist attacks that Targeting civilians and attacks on civilians and infrastructure in Saudi Arabia and the UAE.
On this regard, the (GUYJ) called on the international community to immediately start taking procedural measures in implementation of the UNSC Resolution, and to work to limit the terrorist activities of the group at the media, political and economic levels, as the Houthi terrorist group practicing a dangerous and blatant terrorist repression against Yemenis by silencing and issuing death sentences against journalists and activists who reveal the facts of Houthi crimes in their controlled-areas.
"The Houthis have adopted an extremist and repressive behavior with unparalleled brutality against media and journalists in Yemen through assassinations, imprisonment, kidnappings, arrests, physical torture, unfair sentences, cutting salaries, stopping and confiscating media outlets, misleading public opinion by means of media financed by Iran, and spreading an extremist approach that calls for death and destruction". The statement said.
It called on the international community, which issued Resolution 2624, to work on implementing the resolution on the ground through an integrated criminal procedural matrix, foremost of which is an international trial of Houthi leaders and individuals and their supporters who committed crimes against Yemenis, especially media and journalistic entities.
It also called on various international media institutions, companies and platforms to stop Houthi accounts, pages and media channels as platforms affiliated with a terrorist group in accordance with UNSC Resolution 2624, which is an international reference document that does not contradict humanitarian measures.
The (GUYJ) called on international institutions and organizations working in the media, political and educational aspects to seriously consider and addressed the UNSC Resolution 2624 as a reference document upon which any steps and measures can be built to protect Yemeni society from the danger of sectarian and extremist Houthi ideology and their media discourse that call for death and terrorism against all opponents.
It also called on the international community to intervene quickly and urgently to release the kidnapped journalists in the prisons of the Houthis unconditionally as a priority for implementing the measures of the Resolution.
