Iran-backed Houthis appoint a leader accused of corruption as a minister

The Iran-backed Houthis have appointed Mohammed Sharaf Ameer Al-Din Mutahar as Minister of Industry and Trade, in an indication that they have restricted senior positions to the Hashemite families, regardless of his corruption.

Mutahar is considered one of the major corrupt members of the Houthi group, according to documents submitted by the Houthi Control, Transparency and Anti-Corruption Authority, to the Attorney General of Public Funds.

According to the document obtained by Yemen Details, Mutahar was appointed, in violation of the law and civil service regulations, as deputy director general of the gas company, as he was not among the state’s cadre and did not move up the career ladder.

Mutahar embezzled more than YR26 million, and he was referred to the Public Funds Prosecution for the corruption of the leadership of the gas company, but the prosecution received instructions not to summon or imprison any personality belonging to the Hashemite families in police stations or any of the facilities affiliated to the Houthi Ministry of Interior. According to the document.
