Although the the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) has greatly reduced its food and cash aid provided to the Yemeni people, it does not reach those in need, as it is being manipulated, profited from, and diverted by distributing it by certain Yemeni organizations according to selected or fictitious lists, to find that aid its way in the end is for sale on the black market, to be a means of enrichment for the influential, officials and merchants in various governorates, regions and districts.
The WFP provides every six weeks, that is, each distribution cycle, 50 kilos of flour, 3.5 kilos of legumes, and 4 liters of oil, as it draws attention to what it described as "factors beyond our control, including conflicts in other countries, high food prices, shipping costs, and the lack of resources." sufficient to cover nutritional needs.
Activists asked about the fate of the WFP aid and where the billions of dollars allocated annually to help needy Yemeni families go, calling for an investigation into the aid distribution process and the imbalance that marred it during the years of war.
The aid printed with the logo of the WFP is sold in markets and shops in various Yemeni cities, which confirms the existence of massive corruption and manipulation in its distribution.
The WFP announced last June that it was forced to reduce the assistance it provides to the most needy people, as aid was reduced to less than 50% of the daily needs of five million needy people, while assistance for the rest of the eight million beneficiaries was reduced to about 25% of their daily needs.
The WFP also stopped activities to enhance resilience, livelihoods, nutrition programs and school feeding activities for four million beneficiaries, while it continued to provide assistance within these activities and programs to only about 1.8 million people.
The WFP attributed its move to "the acute shortage of funding and the repercussions of the war in Ukraine, as well as the inflation witnessed at the global level, which contradicts the huge amount of funding that the program receives to cover its activities in Yemen.
