A workshop was held to discuss the necessary measures to mitigate the effects of sudden torrential rains on the production of grain crops in Yemen.

The workshop, which was organized for three days under the auspices of the Yemen Economy Reimagining Project, and was moderated by the Sana’a Center, included officials from the Ministry of Agriculture, representatives of agricultural cooperatives and civil society organizations, farmers, and a number of governmental and non-governmental agencies.

The workshop also included the heads of the offices of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation in the governorates of Sana’a, Aden, Marib, Taiz, Hodeidah, Hadramout, Al-Mahrah, and Lahj, farmers and representatives of civil society organizations, as well as members of agricultural cooperatives, civil defense, and the private sector active in the agricultural sector.

The participants discussed the impact of the sudden floods on the production of grain crops and on food security in Yemen, and the provision of the necessary measures to mitigate these effects on grain production and mechanisms to adapt to them. They also put forward implementable recommendations in the short and medium term that take into account the political reality in the country.

Yasmine Al-Eryani, Executive Director of Knowledge Production at the Sana'a Center, said that the challenges facing the agricultural sector have exacerbated over the past decade due to climate change and political turmoil.
