Egypt has intensified diplomatic efforts to secure the release of Egyptian sailors kidnapped by Somali pirates off the coast of Yemen. The sailors were aboard an oil tanker traversing waters near the Yemeni coastline.
The issue of the abducted sailors was a focal point during a meeting between Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and his Somali counterpart, Abdisalam Omer, on the sidelines of the Korea-Africa Ministerial Conference in Seoul. The Egyptian delegation stressed the urgency of releasing the sailors, ensuring their safety, and facilitating their swift return home.
According to a statement from the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Shoukry emphasized the importance of strengthening the strategic partnership, security cooperation, and trade relations between Egypt and Somalia. He reiterated that the plight of the kidnapped sailors is a top priority, necessitating intensified joint efforts to address this humanitarian and security concern.
The incident dates back to May, when the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the hijacking of an oil tanker carrying eight Egyptian sailors near the Somali coast. This occurred days after Yemeni authorities reported the piracy of a commercial vessel off the coast of Shabwah Governorate, which was manned by 12 sailors of Egyptian and Indian nationality.
This Egyptian initiative is part of a broader coordination between the two nations to counter shared security threats and foster stability in the Horn of Africa region. The area is experiencing escalating tensions due to internal conflicts and maritime threats impacting international trade and navigation security.
Maritime assessments suggest that any resurgence of piracy off the Somali and Yemeni coasts could negatively affect the passage of commercial vessels and oil tankers through the region. This underscores the need for enhanced security and diplomatic cooperation among concerned nations to mitigate these threats.
The families of the abducted Egyptian sailors are awaiting the outcomes of the ongoing diplomatic endeavors, hoping that Egyptian-Somali communications will expedite their safe release and return. Cairo has affirmed its continuous monitoring of the situation through its embassy in Mogadishu and various diplomatic and security channels.
