Trump Confirms US Pilots Safe After Helicopter Incident Near Strait of Hormuz

President Donald Trump confirmed Tuesday that two U.S. pilots involved in a helicopter crash near the Strait of Hormuz are safe. The incident occurred shortly after the New York Times reported the crew of an Apache gunship had been rescued following the aircraft's downing near the Iran-controlled waterway.

It remains unclear whether the helicopter was downed by Iranian forces, experienced mechanical failure, or encountered another issue. The White House, U.S. Department of State, and U.S. Central Command have not immediately responded to requests for comment.

Speaking at John F. Kennedy International Airport before returning to Washington, D.C., President Trump stated, "The pilots are fine. Nobody injured." He indicated that a report on the incident would be released later that day.

The incident follows an appeal from President Trump that led Iran and Israel to halt attacks on each other, though Tehran warned it would resume hostilities if Israel continued to strike Hezbollah in Lebanon. This fragile ceasefire is occurring as Washington seeks an agreement with Tehran to end their protracted conflict.

President Trump also suggested he might have "an idea" for an Iran deal within days. This comes amid increasing pressure ahead of the November midterm elections, where he faces record-low approval ratings. The president has frequently hinted at an imminent deal with Tehran, though no such agreement has materialized.

The weekend witnessed direct confrontations between Iran and Israel, marking the most significant escalation since an April ceasefire. Iran launched missiles towards Israeli territory in retaliation for attacks on Hezbollah, prompting Israel to strike Iranian air defense systems and a petrochemical plant. Iranian officials claimed retaliation against a similar Israeli plant in Haifa. No casualties were reported by authorities on either side.
