Israel Strikes Hezbollah Target Near Beirut Amid Escalating Conflict

The Israeli military announced Sunday it conducted strikes against a Hezbollah target on the outskirts of Beirut, Lebanon, in response to drone and rocket attacks launched by the Iran-backed group towards northern Israel.

This latest escalation occurred at a critical juncture, with President Trump and Iran reportedly nearing a peace agreement framework. The strikes carry the potential for a wider conflict should Iran opt for retaliatory action against Israel, mirroring a response observed a week prior under similar circumstances. The Israeli military indicated on Sunday evening that it was preparing for potential incoming fire towards Israel in the subsequent hours.

In a joint statement, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz confirmed they had authorized the strike on the Dahiya neighborhood, a known stronghold of Hezbollah support located on the periphery of Beirut. The military identified the targeted site as a Hezbollah command center, asserting that "Israel will not tolerate firing at its territory."

Further Israeli airstrikes were reported on Sunday in the Tyre district and other regions of southern Lebanon, according to Lebanese state media. Hezbollah acknowledged the death of one of its operatives near the city of Tyre. The group also claimed responsibility for several attacks on Israeli military positions in southern Lebanon throughout Sunday, though its statements did not explicitly confirm or deny the Israeli accusation of cross-border firing.
