Manchester United has identified midfield targets beyond Mateus Fernandes, with journalist Ben Jacobs confirming the club has alternative options if a move for the West Ham midfielder doesn't materialize.
While Fernandes is reportedly a top priority, United is also keeping tabs on other players. Jacobs indicated that Carlos Baleba remains a potential target, and Sander Berge has also been discussed by the club in recent weeks.
The potential acquisition of Fernandes is complicated by West Ham's valuation, which The Guardian reports is around £80 million, despite the club's recent relegation and financial pressures.
Brighton's Carlos Baleba presents a different profile – a powerful, aggressive midfielder skilled at carrying the ball. United has previously admired him, and his athleticism aligns with the club's midfield rebuild strategy. However, Brighton is known for not selling players cheaply, especially young talent with Premier League experience and future potential, making Baleba potentially as difficult to sign as Fernandes.
Sander Berge, currently at Fulham, is presented as a more experienced and potentially more affordable alternative. While he might not generate the same buzz as Fernandes or Baleba, Berge offers size, composure, and Premier League know-how, which could appeal to United if they opt for a reliable option over another high-cost gamble. United had reportedly considered Berge prior to his move to Fulham.
This suggests Manchester United's midfield strategy is flexible. Fernandes is the primary target, but if West Ham's asking price proves too steep, both Baleba and Berge could emerge as strong secondary options.
