Shipping Traffic Dips Amid Escalating Iran-US Tensions

Renewed hostilities between Iran and the United States have created significant uncertainty for shipowners, leading to a notable decrease in maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. The situation has prompted some vessel operators to deem passage too perilous.

The Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments, saw a substantial drop in traffic over the weekend following a four-day exchange of attacks between Iran and the U.S. While Iranian and U.S. officials have indicated intentions to hold talks, the recent escalations highlight the direct correlation between conflict cessation and the sustained resumption of shipping activities.

Prior to these recent attacks, shipping volume through the strait had reached its highest point since March 1, coinciding with the onset of a regional conflict. Many vessels had been utilizing a U.S.-supported route that circumvented Iranian territorial waters.

However, on Thursday, Iran reasserted its demand that all ships navigate within its waters and secure necessary permits for passage, labeling alternative routes as "unacceptable and extremely dangerous." Later that day, Iranian forces reportedly targeted a container ship transiting through Omani waters on the opposite side of the Persian Gulf, prompting retaliatory strikes from the United States.

The U.S. Central Command confirmed that Iran launched a second attack on Saturday, using a drone against the Panama-flagged tanker Kiku. By Monday, a U.S. official stated that both the United States and Iran had agreed to cease hostilities and facilitate the free movement of vessels.

Despite the weekend's elevated risks, maritime data indicates that 22 ships passed through the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday, a decrease from 38 on Saturday. This figure remains significantly lower than the 74 ships recorded on the preceding Wednesday.
