Ozgur Ozel, the leader of Turkey's main opposition party, has announced his intention to resign and form a new political entity, signaling a significant shift within the Republican People's Party (CHP) amidst an ongoing legal crackdown on President Tayyip Erdogan's opponents.
The anticipated move presents a fresh challenge for the CHP, a party founded by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk over a century ago. It is widely expected that a substantial number of CHP voters and parliamentarians will align with Ozel in the yet-to-be-named new party. This development follows a court ruling in May that nullified the CHP's 2023 congress and, consequently, Ozel's position as chairman.
In a speech delivered to over 80 CHP lawmakers, Ozel asserted that his team's departure from the CHP was not an act of succumbing to political pressure but rather the commencement of a new strategy for opposing Erdogan, who has governed Turkey for more than two decades. "Today, we are on the brink of a sad farewell that has become inevitable and whose time has come. However, we would like to share with the people that we carry the hope of a new beginning," Ozel stated.
The May court decision cited irregularities in the CHP congress and reinstated Kemal Kilicdaroglu, the former leader who was defeated by Erdogan in the 2023 presidential election. Ozel and his supporters have decried the ruling as a politically motivated "coup," occurring within the context of a broad legal campaign targeting the CHP. This crackdown notably included the arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, considered Erdogan's primary political rival, last year.
Government officials maintain that the judiciary operates independently, refuting claims of political motivation. However, these actions have unsettled financial markets and heightened concerns regarding democratic principles and the rule of law in Turkey. The internal strife within the opposition could potentially strengthen Erdogan's position ahead of the next general election, scheduled for 2028 but which analysts suggest might be called earlier to capitalize on the CHP's current challenges.
