MAGA influencer Laura Loomer, once a vocal critic of Ukraine, has abruptly reversed her position after a recent trip to the country, sparking further division within Donald Trump's supporter base.
For years, Loomer, a known conspiracy theorist and staunch Trump loyalist, slammed Ukraine and its supporters, labeling the nation "full of Nazi apologists" and calling American politicians who backed Kyiv "traitors." However, her narrative dramatically shifted following a week-long visit to Ukraine, where she conducted an interview with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and shared images of herself in Kyiv amidst war-torn surroundings.
This shift places Loomer in the midst of an ongoing "MAGA civil war," a schism that has fragmented Trump's base over issues ranging from foreign policy to loyalty to Trump himself. While figures like Candace Owens, Tucker Carlson, and Marjorie Taylor Greene have publicly distanced themselves from Trump on various policy fronts, Loomer has largely remained steadfast in her support, even clashing with critics of Trump online.
Loomer claims her change of heart was prompted by realizing she had been "propagandized by Russian media." In contrast, Trump, when questioned about Loomer's trip and the shifting stances on Ukraine, told reporters, "I think they support what I support. I know what MAGA wants better than anybody else." Trump's own positions on the conflict have fluctuated significantly over the past year.
According to Jared Holt, a senior researcher at Open Measures, Loomer's political maneuvering is driven by her "unwavering adoration of Trump, not a rigid set of ideological beliefs." Holt suggests that Loomer, while holding core anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim views, readily adapts her stances to benefit the former president, essentially following his lead.
