A dramatic video capturing a teenage lifeguard's heroic rescue of a young child from powerful ocean waves at Seabright State Beach has gone viral, earning widespread praise and national attention, including from President Donald Trump.

The footage, recorded and shared by local photographer Scott Vander Dussen, shows the 16-year-old lifeguard, identified as Ryder Williams, holding onto a distressed child amidst large swells. The rescue, which occurred on Saturday in Santa Cruz, concluded successfully with the assistance of a second lifeguard, and no serious injuries were reported.

President Trump re-shared the video on X, commending the lifeguard as a "heroic young man" and expressing a desire to honor him at the White House. However, Ryder's father, Shane Williams, indicated that his son views the incident as simply fulfilling his duty. "He told me he doesn’t know why everyone was blowing this out of proportion," Shane Williams stated, adding that Ryder believes "Any other lifeguard on duty would do the same thing I did."

This summer marks Ryder Williams' first as a California State Parks lifeguard, and the widely publicized rescue was his first of this nature. His father conveyed immense pride, noting that Ryder made a second, unrecorded rescue later the same day. Lifeguards across California have responded to thousands of rescues recently amid dangerous coastal conditions, including large waves and strong currents attributed to tropical cyclones, according to the National Weather Service.

A spokesperson for California State Parks confirmed that the lifeguard acted swiftly after observing a child being swept offshore. The spokesperson, Angelica De La Peña, emphasized the daily courage and dedication of State Park lifeguards, stating, "Our State Park lifeguards courageously risk their own lives every day to keep our visitors safe. Their dedication never goes unnoticed and they are truly heroes to their local communities, Californians and the nation."
