Former England striker Emile Heskey believes Manchester United should target Chelsea's Enzo Fernández if they want to seriously challenge for the Premier League title. Heskey argues that the Argentine midfielder possesses the control, creativity, and authority needed to elevate United's midfield, especially after the departure of Casemiro.
While Manchester United has already bolstered their midfield, Casemiro's exit left a void in terms of experience and defensive stability. Heskey suggests that Fernández, though not a direct replacement, could provide the match-dictating ability and possession progression United needs to consistently compete with top teams like Arsenal, Manchester City, and Liverpool.
Speaking to Metro, Heskey emphasized the need for midfield improvement at United. "Midfield is an area that Manchester United can definitely improve, and Enzo Fernandez would help," he stated. "With Casemiro leaving earlier in the summer, they need to replace that presence. He had a very good end to the season and will be missed. I think Enzo Fernandez could be the one to come in and replace him. And if they get him, I can see them as title challengers."
Heskey also touched on systemic issues, suggesting that with the right setup, United have the talent to rival the league's elite. "They’ve always had the players, Manchester United, but the systems played by previous managers haven’t always suited them. If they get the system right, there’s no reason they shouldn’t be challenging Man City, Arsenal and Liverpool for the title."
However, the prospect of signing Fernández faces significant hurdles. Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso reportedly wants to keep the midfielder, and Fernández's long-term contract gives Chelsea considerable leverage. Furthermore, Chelsea would likely demand a massive transfer fee and would be hesitant to strengthen a direct domestic competitor, especially with potential interest from clubs like Real Madrid and Manchester City adding further complexity.
