Former West Ham star Kevin Nolan reckons the club messed up by letting highly-rated midfielder Freddie Potts leave for Belgian side Club Brugge in a deal reportedly worth £10 million.
Potts, a 22-year-old with loads of potential, is set to make the move this summer, and Nolan expressed his surprise and disappointment over the decision.
“I think this probably could turn out to be a bit of a mistake, but it’s good money for Freddie,” Nolan told talkSPORT. “I think it’s a great move for Freddie to go to Club Brugge and be able to play in Europe, and play the style he wants. I’m quite surprised that this has been allowed to happen, if I’m honest. I thought that he could be one of the players who could stand up this year for West Ham. It doesn’t make sense to me, but I wish Freddie all the luck because he’s a great kid, lovely family, and I’m sure he’ll go and be successful over there.”
Potts, who has been with West Ham for 17 years, is looking forward to a new challenge at a European club, despite leaving his boyhood team.
Meanwhile, West Ham are facing the challenge of bouncing back to the top flight after their relegation, and Nolan's comments suggest they might need to rethink their squad strategy to strengthen effectively.
