The surge began with a small number of individuals, but quickly escalated into a mass movement, reportedly encouraged by social media content. Some videos, including those shared by a Spanish news outlet aiming to highlight migration pressures, inadvertently spurred a dangerous undertaking. Official reports indicate that more than 80 people drowned or were crushed in the ensuing stampede.
A significant catalyst for the influx appears to be a Spanish Supreme Court ruling from three weeks prior. While legal experts clarify the ruling does not preclude subsequent return, misinterpretations spread rapidly, suggesting that anyone reaching Ceuta, by sea or land, could not be deported. This misunderstanding, amplified by online claims about expiring migrant regularization programs, prompted increased attempts to reach the enclave.
Local news outlet El Faro de Ceuta's footage of young men celebrating their arrival in Ceuta, initially intended to illustrate the situation, had an unintended effect, encouraging further crossings. Subsequent reports showing migrants walking freely through the city further fueled the desire to attempt the journey. Influencers also posted videos of themselves swimming to Ceuta, some providing misinformation about the treatment of arriving migrants.
Chat groups on platforms like WhatsApp also played a role, with administrators urging prompt action using messages such as, "Those who do not move today will regret it tomorrow." Despite the initial rush, the vast majority of migrants returned due to harsh conditions, with thousands, particularly sub-Saharan Africans and unaccompanied minors, remaining stranded and facing potential deportation.
