Chelsea is on the verge of signing left-back Pep Chavarria from Rayo Vallecano, marking a significant breakthrough in their search for defensive reinforcements after Marc Cucurella's move to Real Madrid.

Transfer journalist Ben Jacobs reports that Chelsea is close to a full agreement with Rayo Vallecano, finalizing a deal estimated at €19 million plus performance-based add-ons. Personal terms with the Spanish defender have already been agreed upon, and an official announcement is expected soon, following his medical in London.

Chavarria was identified as Chelsea's top choice for the left-back position. Before focusing on Chavarria, the club explored other options, including Leeds United's Gabriel Gudmundsson. The Swedish international had garnered attention for his consistent performances, and he previously expressed that being linked with a club like Chelsea was flattering.

Gudmundsson himself acknowledged the interest, stating, "It’s nice that they see me as an alternative and it’s a sign that something good has been done." However, Chelsea's accelerated negotiations with Rayo Vallecano mean Gudmundsson is now set to remain at Leeds United.

This news will likely be a relief for Leeds manager Daniel Farke, especially as Gudmundsson recently sustained a minor injury during a pre-season match. Assuming the injury isn't serious, Gudmundsson is expected to remain a key player for Leeds in the upcoming season.
