Musk Reportedly Planning Major Texas Political Spending Spree

Elon Musk is gearing up to inject a substantial amount of cash into Texas politics, reportedly planning to spend between $100 million and $200 million to boost Republican candidates in the upcoming midterms.

Sources close to former President Trump's team indicate the focus of this significant financial push will be on increasing voter turnout in key races, with a particular emphasis on Texas. This strategic investment could play a crucial role in determining which party controls the US Senate, especially in races like that of Republican nominee Ken Paxton.

Paxton, currently facing a substantial fundraising deficit against his Democratic opponent James Talarico, could greatly benefit from such external support. While Talarico has reportedly raised around $69 million, Paxton's contributions stand at approximately $9 million. This disparity has persisted despite an endorsement from Donald Trump, with Paxton's campaign struggling to gain financial traction amidst resurfaced scandals from his primary battle against Senator John Cornyn.

The planned expenditure from Musk adds considerable weight to the Republican party's financial arsenal. The Republican National Committee boasts a war chest of $128 million, while the two main GOP super PACs for House and Senate races hold a combined $380 million. MAGA Inc. alone has about $400 million on hand. In contrast, the Democratic National Committee is reportedly in debt, and their corresponding super PACs hold $116 million.

However, Musk's past efforts in voter turnout operations have yielded mixed results. In the 2024 election, his America PAC spent over $46 million on third-party canvassing firms to engage "low propensity" voters. While Trump ultimately won crucial battleground states, Trump campaign officials remained unconvinced that the paid canvassers were the primary driver of the success, attributing it more to Trump's personal appeal and ability to mobilize his base. The 2024 operation also faced worker complaints regarding alleged deception and unrealistic quotas.
