Manchester United's chase for Carlos Baleba is buzzing, but legendary midfielder Roy Keane reckons a gaping hole at the back is still holding the team back from true title contention.
While United are looking sharp in midfield with the potential Baleba signing and previous additions, Keane remains unconvinced about the defense. He recently dropped some strong takes on the "Stick to Football" podcast, pointing out that even a stacked midfield won't solve the team's fundamental issues.
“A good midfield, but if you’re on about winning the league, they’re still short,” Keane stated. He elaborated, “United’s BIG problems are going to be DEFENSIVELY. Midfield and forwards, there’s a big goal threat, but the issue is at the BACK. The fullbacks and two centre halves… still a big issue.”
These comments come as United are reportedly making big moves for Baleba, with The Guardian suggesting a £60 million offer plus add-ons. Baleba has reportedly already agreed to personal terms with the club.
Keane's critique highlights that while Baleba would add serious athleticism and control to the midfield, potentially complementing signings like Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos, a top-tier defensive midfielder can only do so much. United's reported interest in a left-back, with their pursuit of Lewis Hall stalled due to Newcastle's high valuation, also signals that manager Michael Carrick is aware of the need for defensive reinforcements.
Ultimately, Keane's message is clear: improving the squad is one thing, but becoming genuine champions requires a complete defensive overhaul. If United are serious about closing the gap at the top, securing a solid full-back and potentially an elite center-back might be just as crucial as landing their midfield targets.
