Food safety is under the spotlight as multiple recalls hit the market due to potential Salmonella contamination. From jalapeños and eggs to granola and even dog food, consumers are being warned about risks associated with several popular products.
A major Salmonella outbreak linked to jalapeños has sickened 431 people across 32 states, with 57 requiring hospitalization. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention identified jalapeños from Sinaloa, Mexico, distributed by Coast Citrus Distributors, as the culprit. This has led to widespread recalls of products containing these jalapeños, including salsa, guacamole, and salad dressings, at major retailers like Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, Kroger, and Target. Food chains such as Chipotle and Qdoba have also removed the suspect jalapeños from their menus.
Adding to the concern, a separate Salmonella outbreak associated with eggs has affected 98 individuals in 17 states, resulting in 26 hospitalizations. Midwest Poultry Services has been named as a common source, with the company voluntarily recalling approximately 19 million eggs produced in Texas due to potential contamination.
The risks extend beyond produce and eggs. Hampton Grocers is recalling its Lacnola Lactation Granola because of possible contamination stemming from organic moringa powder, an ingredient linked to several Salmonella outbreaks globally since last year. Furthermore, Oma's Pride is recalling its Woof Complete Canine Chicken Recipe dog food after a consumer complaint led to a positive Salmonella test, with three dog illnesses reported.
Salmonella symptoms, including diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps, typically appear 12 to 72 hours after exposure. While outbreaks are more common in warmer months due to increased consumption of fresh produce and outdoor dining, experts emphasize that proper food handling remains key. Cooking food thoroughly is the most effective way to eliminate Salmonella, but for fresh items, diligent handwashing, cleaning food surfaces, prompt refrigeration, and keeping raw meats separate from other foods are crucial preventative measures.
