Over 200 employees at the Wikimedia Foundation, the non-profit powering Wikipedia, have officially voted to join the Communication Workers of America union, marking a significant first for the organization. The US National Labor Relations Board confirmed the 158-14 vote tally this past Thursday.
This move gives employees a new mechanism to address concerns with management, especially as the foundation navigates challenges like the rise of AI chatbots and a dip in volunteer editors. The San Francisco-based foundation, with nearly 700 employees across 39 countries, saw staff from various departments, including software engineering and communications, join the union.
Lauren de Lench, a technical program manager, explained the decision stemmed from a desire for employees to feel safer voicing concerns and ideas without fear of retaliation. "I want us to be loud and debate freely up and down the organizational chart because that’s how we move quickly, address challenges, and come up with the best collective solutions," she stated.
While pay and benefits weren't the primary drivers, frustration over recent management decisions regarding hiring and firing played a key role. This included disbanding a team focused on tools for volunteer editors and removing France from approved hiring locations for certain roles.
Wikimedia Foundation CEO Bernadette Meehan acknowledged the unionization as a new chapter, expressing optimism. She assured staff that their concerns about management practices, planning, and transparency are important and that improvements will continue. The foundation has also stated they will approach this "constructively, lawfully, and with care for the staff."
Employees see this as a way to ensure Wikipedia remains competitive against AI, with figures like senior paralegal Nico Aramayo suggesting a "seat at the table" would be beneficial. The union's next steps involve negotiating a collective bargaining agreement, with expectations of seeking provisions like requiring just cause for termination.
