Newcastle United's cult hero Dan Burn is reportedly set for a significant shift in his role at the club, moving away from consistent first-team starts as his contract winds down.
Burn, a popular figure known for his memorable moments and solid performances, has been a consistent presence for the Magpies, featuring heavily last season in both left-back and centre-back positions. However, with the arrival of new boss Matthias Jaissle and the established partnership of Sven Botman and Malick Thiaw, along with Fabian Schar's contract extension, Burn's playing time is expected to diminish.
Currently sidelined with an ankle injury, the 31-year-old is not anticipated to reclaim a regular starting spot even upon his return to fitness. Instead, reports suggest his influence will transition off the pitch.
It's understood that Burn's role is likely to evolve into more of a dressing room presence this season. Furthermore, there's speculation that a coaching position at St. James' Park could be on the cards for him once his current contract expires in the summer.
Football expert Pete O'Rourke commented on Burn's ongoing importance, stating, "Dan Burn has been a great servant to Newcastle. He’s club captain as well, so he’s still got an important role to play. Now he’s injured, but I’m sure he still plays a huge role off the pitch as well. I think we’ve seen, sort of, the turnaround at Newcastle…it’s now more of a younger squad."
