The meeting occurs as the conflict, involving Iran, the United States, and Israel, intensifies across the Middle East.
Yemen has become a significant new theater of operations. Last week, Iran-backed Houthi militants reportedly seized the strategic port of Mokha and Perim Island in the Red Sea's Bab al-Mandab Strait. Concurrently, attacks targeting Saudi energy infrastructure and efforts to blockade Saudi shipping have exacerbated a global energy crisis, which has been amplified by the ongoing U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran.
The situation was further complicated when Saudi Arabia was compelled to suspend operations of its East-West Pipeline on Friday, following a drone attack originating from Iraq. This pipeline serves as a crucial conduit for the Kingdom's oil exports, particularly after Iran effectively blockaded the Strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf. While no group claimed responsibility for the drone strike, Iraq has been known to host well-armed militias with Iranian backing.
This diplomatic engagement in Oman takes place as direct negotiations between Iran and the United States aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz have reportedly stalled. Iran's continued actions against vessels transiting the strait have placed significant pressure on Gulf Arab states and caused considerable volatility in global oil markets. The price of Brent crude, the international benchmark, briefly surpassed $110 per barrel last week, reaching a multi-month high before settling around $104 by Sunday.
Adding to the regional tensions, a commercial vessel traversing the Strait of Hormuz was struck by a projectile on Sunday, resulting in a fire onboard, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations. State media in Iran reported that an Iranian commercial ship was attacked, leading to one fatality and four injuries.
