Arsenal's impressive early-season form has sparked talk that they could be the team to finally shatter Chelsea's long-standing record of conceding just 15 goals in a Premier League season.
Despite winning the title last season with a solid defense that conceded 27 goals, Mikel Arteta's side has started the current campaign flawlessly, winning all four matches and letting in only one goal. David Raya's stellar performance in the recent win against Sunderland has particularly drawn attention.
Former Chelsea player Tony Cascarino believes Arsenal's current defensive setup rivals the legendary Jose Mourinho-era Chelsea side of 2004/05. He described Arsenal as an "anaconda team" for their suffocating style, stating on talkSPORT, "In every department they are brilliant, they are the team to me who could beat Chelsea’s goals against column." Cascarino added that he previously thought Chelsea's record was unbreakable but sees this Arsenal team as capable of challenging it.
While Arsenal's strong start echoes their form last season, they eventually saw a dip. Even with their title win and Champions League final run, Chelsea's record remained intact. Club legend John Terry himself commented last season that he couldn't envision the record being broken, noting in January, "Can this record of 15 goals conceded in one season ever be beaten? I’m saying no."
If Arsenal maintain their current pace of conceding 0.25 goals per game, they would surpass Chelsea's mark. However, the upcoming season presents numerous challenges, including potential fatigue, injuries, and suspensions that could impact their defensive solidity.
Regardless of whether the record is broken, Arsenal's current performance positions them as strong contenders in this year's title race.
