Initially drawn to the sport due to a personal connection and later facing the intimidation of a hypermasculine surf culture, Walsh developed a unique approach through his daily surf reports on Instagram.
Walsh began sharing detailed updates on wave conditions, winds, and surf quality before dawn each day. His Instagram account, which started as a practical service for local surfers, rapidly gained a global following, amassing over 10,000 followers and inspiring similar accounts. His engaging video dispatches, characterized by their informative content and relaxed surfer aesthetic, have made him an unofficial ambassador for Venice's surf culture.
Beyond his role as a surf chronicler, Walsh has actively worked to create a welcoming space for queer surfers, a community that felt largely absent during his youth. He has organized gatherings and built friendships with gay surfers from around the world, establishing a vibrant queer surf community in Los Angeles. His efforts extended to co-producing the film "Out in the Line-Up," which addressed homophobia within the surfing world, and he has since participated in numerous panels on the topic.
In recent years, Walsh's initiative has been amplified by individuals like Shelly Guidera, who founded Dream Team Surf in 2020. This collective aims to provide a supportive network for queer surfers, emphasizing mutual support and camaraderie. Guidera, who recognized the need for stronger queer representation in Venice surfing, was inspired by Walsh's respected presence and positive contributions to the community.
Dream Team Surf's commitment to inclusivity was recently highlighted by a Pride beach party featuring the message "Trans bodies belong on the beach." Guidera also emphasizes the therapeutic benefits of surfing, drawing on her certification in surf therapy. Both Guidera and Walsh, who also works as a surf instructor, aim to build confidence in their students, break down stereotypes, and foster a sense of joy and expansiveness through their engagement with the ocean and the sport of surfing.
