Younger Generations Aging Faster, Fueling Cancer Rise

New research suggests younger generations are biologically aging at a faster rate than previous ones, potentially explaining the concerning rise in early-onset cancers. A study from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis found that this accelerated biological aging is linked to a higher risk of developing cancers at younger ages.


The study highlights a growing gap between a person's chronological age and their biological age. While chronological age simply counts the years lived, biological age reflects the body's actual condition based on cellular changes, metabolism, and organ function. Researchers observed that the larger this gap becomes, the greater the cancer risk, and recent generations tend to show this trend more prominently.


This accelerated aging doesn't affect all parts of the body equally. For instance, an older-looking immune system was associated with early-onset lung cancer, while aging fat tissue correlated with a higher risk of early-onset colorectal cancer. These findings, published in Nature Medicine, analyzed data from over 154,000 adults in the UK Biobank and 10,000 in the U.S. All of Us Research Program.


While individual lifestyle factors like diet and exercise play a role in cancer risk, they don't fully account for the trend. Scientists are now exploring how broader environmental and societal changes might be contributing to this faster biological aging and increased cancer susceptibility across generations. The goal is to identify high-risk individuals earlier and tailor personalized prevention strategies.


"Our ultimate goal is to decode how modern environments become biologically embedded to drive cancer risk, transforming prevention from broad recommendations to personalized interventions," stated Yin Cao, ScD, a lead researcher on the study. "This brings us closer to identifying risk earlier and developing prevention strategies that are tailored to an individual's biology."
