Yemen's Houthi rebels are demonstrating increasing sophistication and self-reliance in their weaponry, evidenced by long-range missile strikes and advanced naval drones, suggesting a growing capacity for independent weapon development.
While often perceived as less advanced, the group has escalated its capabilities, launching missile attacks toward Israel from over a thousand miles away and utilizing naval drones against shipping in the Red Sea. This growing autonomy appears to be driven by an ambition to produce more advanced armaments, potentially reducing their dependence on Iranian support.
Although supported by Iran, the Houthis had largely remained outside the regional conflicts for months. However, their involvement intensified in July with the declaration of a maritime blockade against Saudi Arabia. Subsequently, they advanced southward, capturing the significant port city of Mokha and islands near the Bab al-Mandab strait, thereby strengthening their control over this critical Red Sea chokepoint.
Timothy A. Lenderking, former U.S. special envoy for Yemen, commented at a Middle East Institute forum that the Houthis "use every opportunity to build their capability, to test their capability, such that they are now the most lethal nonstate actor in the entire Middle East."
A recent report by Anthropic highlighted that a group operating from Houthi strongholds in northern Yemen employed artificial intelligence, specifically the Claude model, in a persistent effort to develop guided weapons. Despite Anthropic's implemented safeguards, the report indicated that this cell progressed to the stage of test-firing a guided rocket.
While the Houthis continue to depend on Iran for critical components in their more advanced drones and ballistic missiles, recent developments, as suggested by the Anthropic report, indicate a significant advancement in their own capabilities for constructing weapon systems.
