A recent report by the Yemeni Network for Human Rights and Freedoms has documented a significant escalation of Houthi attacks in the Taiz Governorate, recording 661 violations against civilians within a mere 12-day period. These aggressions, spanning from September 3 to September 15, 2026, have moved beyond targeting individuals to include assaults on homes, infrastructure, and essential services, underscoring the severity of the ongoing conflict.
The documented violations encompass a range of atrocities, including killings, injuries, field executions, kidnappings, and arbitrary arrests. The report details that the intensified offensive resulted in the deaths of 51 civilians and the injury of 62 others, with women and children disproportionately affected by sniper fire, artillery shelling, mortar attacks, and the use of drones and ballistic missiles. Furthermore, nine military personnel were reportedly executed in the Al-Waze'iyah, Maqbana, and Al-Kadha districts.
The network also recorded 167 cases of abduction and detention, alongside 213 instances of home raids. Critical civilian infrastructure and facilities were also targeted, including five mosques, six health facilities, sixteen electricity stations and generators, and nine communication networks and stations. Significant damage was inflicted upon two bridges and two main roads, including the vital Hajja Al-Abd road connecting Aden and Taiz, as well as 34 civilian vehicles.
These figures highlight the far-reaching consequences of the Houthi escalation, which extend beyond immediate casualties. The deliberate targeting of roads, power grids, communication systems, and health centers severely restricts the daily lives of civilians, exacerbating difficulties in accessing medical care, clean water, food, and transportation amidst an already challenging humanitarian situation in the governorate.
The report further indicates that the intensified attacks have led to the displacement of thousands of families, compounded by shortages of food, water, and medicine, and a decline in essential services. The network warns that the continued assaults pose a grave threat to the remaining civilian infrastructure and will inevitably intensify the suffering of the local population.
In a deeply concerning development, the report also addresses the recruitment of children, both Yemeni nationals and African refugees and migrants, who are being forcibly conscripted and sent to the front lines. This practice is condemned as a serious violation that places the most vulnerable populations at extreme risk during wartime.
The Yemeni Network for Human Rights and Freedoms has called for urgent action from the international community and human rights organizations. They urge immediate intervention to protect civilians, meticulously document the violations, exert pressure to halt the targeting of civilian objects, and ensure the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid and essential services to affected populations and displaced persons.
