Presidential Leadership Council member, Lieutenant General Abdulrahman Al-Mahrami, has returned to Aden from Riyadh amid heightened military confrontations with the Houthi group.
Al-Mahrami, also known as "Abu Zur'a" and Commander of the Southern Armed Forces, arrived in the interim capital of Aden. His return marks his first since the events of January and occurs against a backdrop of complex political and military dynamics, including an escalating Houthi advance towards Taiz and strategic heights overlooking Bab El Mandeb and Lahj.
The timing of Al-Mahrami's return coincides with rapid military developments along multiple front lines. Government and Southern forces are reportedly engaged in strategic movements to counter Houthi offensives and address the intensified fighting across various sectors.
His presence in Aden is considered significant given the increasing military pressures facing the nation. The coordination of efforts among anti-Houthi forces and the management of military affairs are expected to be paramount issues moving forward.
Political analyst Yasser Al-Yafie noted that Al-Mahrami's return carries added importance due to its proximity to a recent visit by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed to Riyadh. This visit, at the invitation of Saudi Defense Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman, included discussions with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman regarding Saudi-Emirati relations and regional developments. Al-Yafie suggested that Al-Mahrami's arrival in Aden is politically and militarily symbolic.
Al-Yafie welcomed Al-Mahrami's return and expressed hope for the return of other southern leaders to address what he described as a "political vacuum." He emphasized the necessity of unifying southern ranks and decision-making, from Al Mahrah in the east to Bab El Mandeb in the west, to prepare for the challenging political and military phase ahead.
