Brentford's Yarmoliuk Sees Red After VAR Review for Headbutt

Brentford midfielder Yehor Yarmoliuk was sent off with a straight red card following a dramatic VAR intervention late in the first half against Liverpool.

The Ukrainian international was dismissed in the eighth minute of first-half stoppage time after the referee reviewed footage of him appearing to direct his head towards Liverpool defender Jérémy Jacquet during an off-the-ball confrontation. The incident occurred deep in first-half injury time as both teams prepared for a Liverpool corner, with tensions running high in the box.

Jacquet went down holding his face, and replays clearly showed Yarmoliuk aggressively moving his head towards the defender. The on-field referee, John Brooks, was called to the pitchside monitor by VAR. After reviewing the footage of the violent conduct, Brooks returned to issue Yarmoliuk a red card in the 45th minute plus stoppage time. Because the offense happened when the ball was not in play, Liverpool were not awarded a penalty despite the foul occurring inside the box.

Brentford manager Keith Andrews will likely be frustrated by this lapse in discipline. The Bees had taken a deserved 1-0 lead just minutes before the incident through Keane Lewis-Potter's 44th-minute goal. Yarmoliuk's actions force his team to play the remainder of the match with ten men, significantly shifting the momentum from what had been a controlled performance.

Liverpool, trailing 1-0, now enter the second half with a numerical advantage. Manager Andoni Iraola will be looking for his side to exploit the extra space at the Gtech Community Stadium, pressing high and utilizing the width to break down Brentford's defense and turn the match around in their favor.
