Former Manchester United defender Paul Parker is urging interim manager Michael Carrick to bench Bruno Fernandes, citing the midfielder's subpar performances this season.
Fernandes, typically a standout player for the Red Devils and last season's assist king with 21 Premier League assists, is struggling to replicate his form. Manchester United has had a shaky start, securing only two wins in their last nine matches across all competitions, leading Parker to believe Fernandes isn't pulling his weight.
Parker suggested that Fernandes's frustration often spills over onto his teammates, and the team currently needs collective effort. He believes dropping the Portuguese international might allow for players who are willing to work harder and contribute more to step in.
"He just hasn’t been there when it’s needed, and it’s costing United now," Parker told The Metro. "I think a strong manager, a manager who wants to make a mark and is willing to be brave, is going to make that decision."
Parker concluded by stating, "If you’re watching the game of football and put all that other rubbish away, then he just hasn’t done enough." The question remains whether Carrick will make the bold move to drop Fernandes for the upcoming match against Leeds United.
