UN Warns of Rapid Humanitarian Crisis in Taiz Amid Road Closures

The United Nations has issued a stark warning regarding the swift deterioration of the humanitarian and economic situation in Yemen's Taiz governorate, citing ongoing road closures and insecurity that are severely impeding the delivery of essential supplies and exacerbating civilian suffering.

Laurent Bukera, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Yemen, expressed grave concern over the escalating conditions, highlighting that restricted access prevents vital resources, including fuel, from reaching the city and its surroundings. This blockade directly impacts residents' ability to access basic goods and services.

Bukera urged the Houthi militia to urgently open safe corridors and allow unimpeded entry for food, medicine, essential commodities, and humanitarian aid. He cautioned that continued restrictions on humanitarian access pose a significant threat to lives and risk increasing the prevalence of preventable diseases and hunger.

The statement also revealed alarming indicators of failing essential services. Taiz's health sector is reportedly on the verge of collapse due to a critical shortage of power for hospitals and a decline in the availability of medical oxygen, endangering patients reliant on life-saving healthcare. This crisis coincides with a more than twofold increase in the prices of remaining food and fuel supplies, placing immense financial strain on families struggling to meet daily needs.

Water scarcity has also intensified, with the city's production reduced by half and available alternatives depleted, leaving hundreds of thousands of households without adequate water access. These developments underscore the profound impact of disrupted transportation and supply lines on civilian life, affecting not only the availability of goods but also the operational capacity of hospitals, patient access to treatment, and families' ability to secure food and water.

The UN and its partners are continuing efforts to support those in need and deliver critical goods, services, and medical supplies to Taiz. Bukera emphasized that safe and unrestricted access for aid is imperative to sustain vital services and reach affected communities before further lives are lost to hunger, disease, and injury.
