Taiz Residents Protest Houthi Blockade and Terror Tactics, Urge International Action

Residents of Taiz renewed their protests against the Houthi terrorist militia's blockade and ongoing attacks, appealing to the United Nations and the international community for urgent action beyond condemnation to protect civilians.

Men, women, and children participated in a demonstration organized by the Taiz Human Rights Center, holding banners in Arabic and English condemning the road closures and targeting of residential areas. Protesters demanded secure access to food, medicine, fuel, and water, reflecting widespread public concern over the continued restrictions on movement and essential supplies.

Protesters carried slogans such as "Water, medicine, and a road… is this too much to ask for Taiz?" and "The Houthi blockade suffocates Taiz… and multiplies the suffering of civilians and the sick." They also displayed images of bombing victims and scenes of destruction, along with signs denouncing attacks on homes, hospitals, markets, and schools, imploring the international community to intervene and halt these violations.

A statement issued by the protest indicated that shelling and sniping attributed to the Houthi militia resulted in the deaths of 44 civilians and injuries to 110 others, including 47 women and 51 children, between October 1st and 26th. The statement also noted the continued targeting of civilian infrastructure and the forced displacement of thousands of families, hindering access to basic needs and humanitarian aid.

These protests occur amid persistent road closures to Taiz, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis by impeding the movement of people and the delivery of goods and medical supplies, thereby increasing living costs and straining health facilities. United Nations reports have indicated that roads to Taiz have been cut off for approximately twenty days, with fighting obstructing humanitarian access and civilian movement.

The continued road closures, coupled with the deteriorating security situation, mean that Taiz's crisis extends beyond restricted movement to include the escalating cost of basic necessities and difficulties in transporting patients and securing fuel for hospitals. The statement from the protest warned of a severe decline in the health sector, citing acute shortages of fuel, medicine, oxygen, and medical supplies in 42 health facilities, threatening patient lives and intensifying civilian suffering.

Protesters urged the United Nations, the Security Council, and the international community to exert pressure to end the blockade, cease attacks on civilians and civilian objects, and ensure the safe and sustainable opening of roads and crossings. They also called on the World Health Organization, the International Committee of the Red Cross, and Doctors Without Borders to provide urgent assistance to hospitals and health facilities. The demonstration presents a critical test for the international community to translate humanitarian warnings into tangible actions, emphasizing that the demands for open roads and secure supplies are directly linked to the protection of civilians and their right to healthcare, food, and freedom of movement.
