Manchester United might face a hefty compensation bill if they choose Eddie Howe as their next manager, with reports suggesting Newcastle United are owed a payout. Howe has reportedly emerged as a top contender to take the reins at Old Trafford.
According to Chronicle Live, Newcastle are entitled to a substantial sum if Howe lands the gig with their Premier League rivals, which could throw a wrench in United's plans to secure his services.
The 48-year-old is considered a serious candidate, thanks to his solid track record in English football. He previously enjoyed success at Newcastle, steering them back into the Champions League and winning the Carabao Cup. His knack for player development and squad building could definitely catch the eye of United's top brass.
However, the former Bournemouth boss departed Newcastle in July, despite having years left on his contract. While the club respected his decision to leave, the financial specifics of his exit could make a move to Manchester United a bit tricky.
Newcastle could be in line for millions because of the remaining terms in Howe's contract. This agreement could mean a significant payment if United decide to bring him in.
The situation gets even more complex if members of Howe's former coaching team, who also left Newcastle when he did, are part of any potential deal. Manchester United will need to crunch the numbers before making a final call. Even though Howe is currently available, appointing him might not be a budget-friendly move.
United are reportedly looking at other options too, with former Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann also mentioned as a possibility. With uncertainty around Michael Carrick's future, the club's hierarchy faces some tough decisions. Howe's Premier League experience is a big plus, but that compensation clause with Newcastle could be a major roadblock.
