BBC pundits Clinton Morrison and Jobi McAnuff are questioning Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso's decision to keep highly-rated Brazilian winger Estevao Willian on the bench throughout the Carabao Cup defeat against Liverpool.
Chelsea was knocked out in the fourth round at Anfield after a dramatic 6-5 penalty shootout loss, following a 1-1 draw in normal time. However, it was Alonso's choice not to bring the exciting teenager into the game that left both pundits particularly frustrated. Despite Chelsea facing injuries to key attacking players, Estevao remained an unused substitute as the Blues struggled to find a decisive goal.
Former Crystal Palace striker Clinton Morrison expressed his bewilderment, stating live on BBC Radio 5 Live, "How Estevao has not got on the pitch tonight I do not know. He must be thinking, what do I have to do? We have injuries to two of the star players up front and I’m still not getting on the pitch."
Fellow pundit Jobi McAnuff echoed these sentiments, adding, "I think it’s one Xabi Alonso has to answer very soon [on why Estevao hasn’t played] because you can talk about injuries and suspensions to forward players and again, in a game like today he is a difference maker." McAnuff highlighted Estevao's potential impact, noting, "He’s the last person you want to see come on that pitch tonight if you are a Liverpool defender. Him getting on the ball, running at you, making things happen."
On the pitch, Chelsea initially took the lead through Morgan Rogers' penalty in the 40th minute, but Cody Gakpo equalized for Liverpool with a spot-kick just before halftime. The match proceeded to a tense penalty shootout, where Liverpool ultimately prevailed 6-5.
Estevao's limited game time has already sparked exit speculation, with several clubs, including Liverpool, reportedly showing interest. Being left on the bench during such a crucial knockout tie has only intensified concerns about his role under Alonso and could fuel further rumours about his long-term future at Stamford Bridge.
