Ally McCoist, a pundit for TNT Sports, has voiced his strong criticism of Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker following the Reds' stunning 3-2 Champions League defeat against Fenerbahçe.
Liverpool twice held the lead in the intense match in Istanbul but ultimately succumbed to a late comeback, with substitute Vedat Muriqi scoring the winning goal in the 80th minute to seal a remarkable victory for the Turkish giants.
McCoist specifically zeroed in on Alisson's positioning for Fenerbahçe's decisive third goal, questioning why the Brazilian keeper didn't come off his line to intercept the cross. "Brilliant header," McCoist commented live on TNT Sports. "When the ball comes in, I just think it’s in the air for a very long time, and I’m looking at my goalkeeper and I’m thinking where is Alisson?! The goalkeeper has to come for that.”
Liverpool's promising start saw teenage midfielder Trey Nyoni open the scoring in the 25th minute with a superb volley, marking his first senior goal for the club. However, their lead was short-lived, as former Manchester United player Mason Greenwood leveled the score four minutes later with a deflected free-kick that caught Alisson off guard.
The Reds managed to regain the lead in the second half through substitute Alexander Isak in the 69th minute. Yet, the defensive fragility resurfaced as Archie Brown equalized for Fenerbahçe, capitalizing on confusion involving Alisson and Cody Gakpo. This set the stage for a tense finish, with Fenerbahçe ultimately securing the win when Muriqi found the net with a header. The comeback was a memorable one for Fenerbahçe's manager, former Liverpool forward Dirk Kuyt.
