Chelsea is facing a defensive dilemma as top clubs Liverpool and Barcelona are reportedly circling their talented defender, Levi Colwill. The Blues are keen to secure the England international on a new contract to ward off burgeoning interest.
Although Colwill's current deal runs until 2029, Chelsea views sorting out his contract as a key priority for 2027. Despite some injury setbacks, the club believes the 23-year-old has a massive future ahead and could become a cornerstone of their project.
However, industry sources indicate significant interest from both Liverpool and Barcelona. One source revealed that Barcelona has identified Colwill as a prime target, with internal discussions already happening about a potential bid, possibly as early as the January transfer window.
While some are downplaying immediate transfer talk, there's a clear sense at Chelsea that they need to proactively address the situation. Talks with the defender are expected in the New Year, which could shed light on whether Liverpool and Barcelona have successfully swayed his thoughts.
Even if Chelsea is determined to keep Colwill, some figures suggest that an offer in the region of £65-75 million could be difficult to refuse, especially given he's a homegrown player and selling him would represent significant pure profit for the club.
This situation adds another layer of complexity, and Chelsea will likely aim to resolve it quickly to avoid a drawn-out transfer saga. If a departure were to occur, Chelsea has reportedly considered players like Jacopo Ramoni from Como and Koni De Winter from AC Milan as potential replacements.
