Informed security sources revealed major disputes within the Iran-backed Houthi leaders, due to arrangements made by the United Nations for the visit of envoy for the UN's refugee agency Angelina Jolie to Sanaa.
The Hard-line Houthi leaders threatened to assassinate Jolie if she reached the areas under their control, especially the capital, Sanaa. Security sources said.
Actress Angelina Jolie arrived in Yemen on Sunday to meet people who have been displaced by a seven-year conflict that has led to one of the world's deepest humanitarian crises.
Jolie, a celebrity envoy for the UN's refugee agency since 2012, will meet Yemeni families, including those whose lives have been turned upside down by fighting between rebel, pro-government and foreign forces.
The Houthis see that her visit to Sana'a will be a betrayal of the Houthis' blood. According to the sources.
One of the sources, who asked not to be mentioned, said that there is a plan put by the hard-line Houthi leaders, to assassinate Jolie, as they claim that it contradicts their general tendency to fight America and Israel.
On this regard, Houthi activist Zain Abideen Al-Mu'ayad said in his Twitter that Jolie's visit had exposed the falsehood of the Iranian Twelver slogans.
"It is disastrous to meet who engages in prostitution and immorality (...) Ansar Allah become supporters of Angelina!". Al-Mu'ayad added.
The UN refugee agency said: “Angelina Jolie is hoping her visit will help draw attention to the catastrophic consequences of over seven years of conflict,”.
“Will meet Yemeni displaced families & refugees to understand how the conflict has ripped their lives apart.”
Her visit comes before the annual pledging meeting for Yemen on March 16. UN aid chiefs worry that donor fatigue will impact the event, as governments shift allocations to Ukraine, Afghanistan and other crises.
