President Donald Trump on Monday will sign an executive order terminating US sanctions on Syria, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters.
The move follows through on Trump’s decision in May to unwind the measures to help Syria rebuild after a devastating civil war. Trump announced the surprise move during a visit to Saudi Arabia, and said he made the decision at the behest of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
The following day, Trump met with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa in Riyadh in the presence of MBS. The US later officially issued a sanctions waiver for Syria.
