The UN Special Envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, has described the tragic incident in Al-Dhale'e Governorate, where an explosion of war debris killed and injured several children, as a stark reminder of the severe danger posed by landmines and unexploded ordnance to civilians in Yemen.
Grundberg expressed profound sadness in a statement on Wednesday regarding the deaths of at least five children and the injuries sustained by seven others in the village of Al-Ribei in Al-Dhale'e Governorate. He extended condolences to the families of the victims and wished the injured a swift recovery.
The UN envoy emphasized that this tragedy underscores the ongoing repercussions of the conflict in Yemen, noting that the country remains among the most contaminated by explosive remnants worldwide. These hazards continue to claim civilian lives and threaten their well-being, even in areas far removed from active frontlines.
Grundberg asserted that safeguarding civilians, particularly children, necessitates intensified efforts in clearing war debris and expanding risk awareness programs. Such measures are crucial to reducing further casualties and mitigating the persistent humanitarian impact of the conflict.
