Fernandes Fatigue, Not Injury: De Zerbi Clears Up Fitness Fears

Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi has confirmed that midfielder Mateus Fernandes is not injured, but is instead experiencing fatigue, easing concerns after the player was left out of the squad for the match against Sydney FC.

Fans grew worried after footage showed the Portuguese star training separately from the main group prior to the pre-season fixture in Australia. However, De Zerbi clarified post-match that the decision to omit Fernandes was a tactical move to prevent any potential issues.

“Just fatigue, the calf. We took the decision to not take any risk and to recover,” De Zerbi stated, as reported by Football London. “But next Wednesday when we start the pre-season in London, he will be ready to work.”

This cautious approach aligns with Tottenham's overall strategy for managing player fitness during a demanding summer schedule, aiming to keep key assets healthy for the upcoming campaign. The 22-year-old is expected to rejoin full team training sessions upon the squad’s return to Hotspur Way next week.

Fernandes, a high-profile £85 million signing from West Ham, has already generated significant buzz among supporters. He made an explosive unofficial debut against MK Dons, scoring a stunning long-range volley to secure the win, and followed up with another impactful performance against Auckland FC.

While fans were keen to see him play in Australia, De Zerbi is prioritizing the player's long-term durability. Fernandes is set to be fully integrated back into the squad as Tottenham gears up for the Premier League season.
