Despite a backdrop of controversial Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) actions, including fatal shootings and the stripping of Temporary Protected Status for Haitian migrants, the core MAGA Republican base shows unwavering support for the agency. Polls indicate a significant majority of these supporters remain confident in ICE and oppose calls for its abolition.
Following the revocation of Temporary Protected Status for hundreds of thousands of Haitian migrants, prominent figures within the MAGA movement, such as Steve Bannon and Mike Davis, vocally demanded their immediate deportation. Online, extremist groups echoed these sentiments, with some expressing jubilation over the news and calling for the removal of Haitian migrants.
ICE's operations, while perhaps less visible than in the past, have continued at a high volume, with deportation and arrest numbers remaining substantial. Recent weeks have seen increased scrutiny, including an ICE agent fatally shooting Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston and Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero in Biddeford, Maine, both incidents occurring while the men were in their vehicles. Furthermore, reports indicate ICE is tracking critics online and obstructing oversight of its detention centers.
The Trump administration has also reportedly intensified its focus on immigrants with expired visas or those in transitional visa statuses, even arresting spouses of American citizens at airports. Despite these widely reported incidents and a general public sentiment leaning towards less forceful immigration policies, a recent YouGov poll revealed that 74 percent of MAGA Republicans express confidence in ICE, with 80 percent opposing its abolition.
This strong backing is further supported by a Public Religion Research Institute poll, showing three-quarters of Republicans viewing ICE positively, favoring increased funding, and disagreeing that the agency makes communities less safe. Notably, 73 percent of Republicans also expressed support for internment camps for undocumented immigrants awaiting deportation. A significant portion of Republicans, however, reported not hearing about recent ICE-involved shootings, while former President Trump publicly affirmed the agency's popularity.
ICE is on track to deport approximately 458,000 individuals this year, a figure that, while large, falls short of the one million deportations once promised. Reports from the ACLU highlight widespread civil rights violations, including the targeting of US citizens, some of whom were children, by ICE agents. Research from UC Berkeley indicates that half of all individuals arrested by ICE have no criminal records.
While the broader American public appears critical of ICE's methods, with a majority believing the agency uses excessive force and nearly half favoring its abolition, the MAGA base remains a staunch supporter. Political strategists suggest that the Republican party is banking on this sustained loyalty, investing more in immigration-related advertising, anticipating that their base's strong stance will resonate in upcoming elections.
