Marc Papas, a dedicated cyclist, is undertaking an ambitious project to ride every public street in Los Angeles, having already covered over 78% of the estimated 7,516 miles.
Papas, who moved to Los Angeles in late 2020, initially harbored concerns about cycling in the city due to its reputation for heavy car traffic. However, his experiences riding along the coast and on the Westside quickly dispelled these fears. He now cycles extensively, often surprising friends who believe he exclusively uses his bicycle.
The project, dubbed "The Project," began organically after Papas completed riding all 60 miles of streets in San Marino on New Year's Eve 2023. This initial accomplishment led him to complete Pasadena's 400 miles and subsequently begin exploring new streets in Northeast Los Angeles. He employs a methodical approach based on Eulerian Path theory, typically mapping out rectangular segments and then tracing loops within them to efficiently cover ground without overlap.
As Papas has covered more of the city, he has developed a deeper appreciation for Los Angeles's diverse architecture and the numerous murals adorning walls, particularly in South and East Los Angeles. He has identified culturally significant artworks commemorating people and events, expressing a desire to organize mural tours for others.
Papas estimates he covers approximately 75 unique miles each week, positioning him to complete the entire city within three years, around mid-December. He plans to conclude his journey on Eldred Street in Mount Washington, noting its reputation as one of the steepest streets in the country as a fitting final challenge.
While not advocating that everyone adopt his extreme approach, Papas hopes his project demonstrates the feasibility and enjoyment of cycling within Los Angeles, even with imperfect infrastructure. He views cycling as a powerful tool for civic engagement and gaining a profound familiarity with one's surroundings, encouraging both beginners and experienced riders to explore their neighborhoods and beyond.
