Man Found Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity in Mother's Dismemberment Case

A Southern California man accused of killing his mother, dismembering her body, and disposing of the remains in a dumpster has been found not guilty by reason of insanity.

David Hoetzlein, 25, of Camarillo, was arrested in 2022 on suspicion of killing his 62-year-old mother, Tomoko Hoetzlein. Sheriff's officials reported that deputies responded to a call regarding possible human remains found in a dumpster at an apartment complex where the two resided.

According to Ventura County Chief Deputy District Attorney Erin Meister, Tomoko Hoetzlein was a devoted mother who actively sought mental health treatment for her son. "Tragically, she lost her life while trying to help him," Meister stated.

Ventura County District Attorney Erik Nasarenko confirmed that two independent medical evaluations concluded Hoetzlein met the legal criteria for an insanity defense. The statement indicated Hoetzlein has a history of severe mental illness and had recently been released from a treatment facility. His mother had reportedly taken steps to secure his care, including contacting his caseworker and law enforcement prior to the incident.

Hoetzlein will be committed to a maximum-security state mental hospital for treatment, with a potential maximum confinement period of life. Neighbors described the apartment complex area as safe and quiet, with some recalling Hoetzlein frequently barricading himself in the apartment.
