Jinny Lu, a 6-year-old white pug rescued from South Korea, has been crowned the winner of the annual World's Ugliest Dog Contest held at the Sonoma County Fair in Santa Rosa.
Originally from the cold mountains of South Korea, where she lived in a modest wooden box, Jinny Lu's life has been transformed. She was brought to the United States by Pug Rescue of Korea and adopted four years ago, now residing in Ukiah, California. The contest, celebrating its 50th year, awarded Jinny Lu and her owner a $5,000 prize, a trip to New York for an appearance on NBC's "Today," and a feature on limited-edition cans of Mug Root Beer, a contest sponsor.
Jinny Lu, characterized by her protruding light brown eyes, small black ears, and a notably floppy tongue, enjoys snuggling with her canine siblings and basking in the sun. According to the contest website, she has a penchant for sampling her siblings' meals by deftly using her tongue. The website also humorously notes her habit of "screaming at her reflection in the mirror" when not causing mischief at the dinner table.
This was not Jinny Lu's first foray into the competition; it was her fourth appearance. Last year, she secured second place, narrowly losing to Petunia, a hairless Frenchie and English Bulldog mix. This year, an albino Pomeranian-Chihuahua named Pinky took home the second-place ribbon.
The World's Ugliest Dog Contest, hosted by the Sonoma-Marin Agricultural Association, aims to promote animal adoption. The organization emphasizes that the event celebrates the "wonderful characters" of dogs and underscores the message that "true beauty comes in all shapes, sizes, and smiles." Mandy Clendenen, chief executive of the association, stated in a recent news release, "For 50 years, this event has celebrated the uniqueness of every dog while sharing an important message of compassion, rescue, and acceptance."
