Iran has resumed discussions with neighboring Oman regarding the management of the Strait of Hormuz, as diplomatic efforts to resolve broader conflicts with the United States remain stalled and economic pressures mount.
For weeks, Iran and Oman have engaged in intermittent talks concerning the control of traffic through the strategically vital waterway, which historically facilitated a significant portion of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments. The two nations announced on Tuesday that they had deliberated on establishing a "joint temporary navigational corridor" through the strait and committed to clearing it of naval mines.
While active hostilities between the U.S. and Iran have largely subsided, the pathway through the strait continues to pose risks. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations reported on Tuesday that an oil tanker was struck by an unidentified projectile approximately nine nautical miles northeast of Oman's Ash Shishah, an area situated at the entrance to the strait.
In a separate development, the U.S. Secret Service confirmed it is aware of a video broadcast by Iranian state television that allegedly details a plot to assassinate President Trump's youngest son, Barron. The three-minute video claimed Barron Trump, aged 20, was under surveillance and purported that a $10 million bounty had been placed on his life.
Despite these ongoing tensions, the U.S. is reportedly beginning to redeploy personnel to certain diplomatic missions in the Middle East that had been evacuated or scaled back due to the conflict with Iran. This move suggests a perceived reduction in the immediate risk of escalation, although some embassies will initially operate with reduced capacity.
The United States recently threatened to penalize countries continuing business with Iran in an effort to disrupt its economy, though it indicated penalties would not be immediate.
