Donning a Darth Vader costume, a San Diego DJ crashed a city council meeting to protest the use of surveillance technology by police. The stunt, which went viral on social media, aimed to draw attention to concerns about privacy and potential misuse of Flock Safety cameras.
Anthony Ralphs, a local DJ and activist, impersonated the iconic Star Wars villain at a San Diego City Council budget meeting. During the session, a masked Vader, complete with the character's signature breathing sounds, delivered a speech criticizing the council's decision to renew a contract with Flock Safety, a surveillance company whose technology has faced scrutiny over potential abuses and expanded capabilities beyond license plate tracking.
Speaking as Vader, Ralphs stated, "The emperor is a fan of Flock. And we must continue utilizing Flock technologies so that we can follow and surveil the rebel scum as they move from playground to playground, from playground to pool, from pool to gymnasium." The recording of this statement quickly gained traction online, reaching millions on platforms like TikTok and Instagram.
Ralphs, who has been actively campaigning against the San Diego Police Department's use of Flock technology, explained that his initial plan was to remain anonymous. However, as the video gained momentum, he decided to "take ownership" of the protest. He shared that this was a last resort after months of attending meetings and advocating through more traditional means, feeling that constituents' concerns were being ignored.
