Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated on Tuesday that Tehran is prepared to reciprocate immediately should the United States fulfill its obligations under an interim agreement.
Speaking at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit in Bishkek, Pezeshkian's remarks followed a period of direct confrontations between the U.S. and Iran. These exchanges included a U.S. strike on Larak Island and subsequent Iranian attacks on two U.S. air bases in Jordan, marking the first such actions since late July.
"I am stating clearly that if the U.S. returns to its commitments under the Memorandum of Understanding, the Islamic Republic of Iran will immediately reciprocate," state media quoted Pezeshkian as saying.
This statement refers to a preliminary accord reached in June between Tehran and Washington, aimed at de-escalating tensions. However, the deal faltered due to disputes over its implementation. Iran has consistently indicated that it would ensure unimpeded passage through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for international oil transit, contingent upon Washington's adherence to the agreement's terms.
Pezeshkian also emphasized in Bishkek on Monday that conflict benefits no party and that Iran remains amenable to a negotiated resolution of its dispute with Washington. U.S. President Donald Trump had previously indicated a forthcoming response to the Iranian attacks, though he also suggested to reporters that these renewed actions did not signify an escalation to full-scale warfare.
