The highly anticipated all-electric Range Rover has officially landed, boasting impressive specs and a premium EV experience. After delays from its initial December 2023 announcement, the luxury electric SUV is now ready to hit the road.
Under the hood, the electric Range Rover packs a punch with dual 260-kilowatt motors delivering power comparable to a V8, hitting up to 542 horsepower and a substantial 850 Newton-meters of torque. JLR claims these motors offer 20 percent more efficiency than others of similar size. Powering the beast is a dual-stacked 118.5-kWh battery featuring 800-volt split-charging technology, capable of recharging from 10 to 80 percent in just 22 minutes, or adding 137 miles of range in 10 minutes. The estimated maximum range is a solid 372 miles under WLTP standards, with JLR projecting a real-world distance of up to 333 miles.
Performance-wise, this electric behemoth can sprint from 0 to 60 mph in a swift 4.3 seconds, a remarkable feat given its likely weight. However, this luxury comes with a hefty price tag. In the UK, the entry-level Autobiography model starts at £154,070 (around $208,000), soaring to over $304,000 for the SV Black long-wheelbase version. US buyers can get a head start with the SE-spec model starting at $138,000, before delivery and destination charges.
The delay in the Range Rover Electric's arrival may also be linked to a broader cautiousness in the luxury EV market, with some rivals like the electric Mercedes G-Wagen seeing sluggish sales. JLR is betting on its "Range Rover first, electric second" strategy to differentiate its offering, emphasizing the SUV's legendary off-roading capabilities, which have been enhanced with advanced electric technology. The vehicle features traction management that controls motor speed 100 times faster than combustion systems and can handle water wading up to 900 millimeters.
Extensive testing has been a hallmark of the Range Rover Electric's development, with JLR subjecting batteries to extreme temperature variations and subjecting the vehicle to millions of miles of virtual and physical testing. This rigorous process has led to over 300 patent applications for the model. JLR is backing its engineering with a robust eight-year or 100,000-mile warranty.
