Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk got into a heated exchange with a reporter during a Netherlands press conference ahead of their UEFA Nations League opener against Germany.
The veteran defender, who has retained the captain's armband under new Oranje boss Xavi, has often faced criticism from Dutch media. This latest incident was sparked by a question about the Netherlands' disappointing World Cup exit.
Van Dijk directly addressed claims made by journalist Valentijn Driessen, who had previously suggested the defender and former coach Ronald Koeman had "betrayed everything our national team stands for." When questioned about what went wrong at the World Cup, Van Dijk retorted, "It’s easy to say in hindsight… One of your colleagues also said, of course, that it was my idea to switch to playing with a back five. That is utter nonsense."
The reporter suggested the media was "still getting under your skin," to which Van Dijk replied, "I’ve never had anything against the media, but when nonsense is being sent out there… We didn’t play a good World Cup. It’s not about me. You perform together; you’re a team. Your claim that I destroyed Dutch football after the World Cup – that sort of thing is completely baseless…"
As captain, Van Dijk is always under scrutiny, and while the Netherlands did underperform at the World Cup, the Liverpool star felt singled out for unfair criticism. His strong performances for his club at the start of the season, helping Liverpool secure three consecutive clean sheets, suggest he's ready to let his play do the talking.
